In mid-October, we set off on our road trip to experience the fall colors in the Smokies and beyond. We went to Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio, spent five nights in the Smokies, checked out Helen, GA for a night, made a quick stop in Columbia, South Carolina, met our besties in Charleston, SC for a long weekend, and finished our time together in Southport, NC. Jen flew home and Eric continued on to the Outer Banks and West Virginia (though without Jen, few pictures exist).

Fall in the Smokies

Helen, GA is a mighty strange and fun place.

In Columbia, South Carolina, we learned all about the trees knees at Congaree National Park and then visited the University of South Carolina.

Charelston, SC is a beautiful town with an intense history, great southern hospitality, and outstanding food. We enjoyed a walking tour, visited the International Museum of Slavery, drove out to some of the out islands in search of authentic Gullah food (didn’t find it), and enjoyed time with our friends.

We found Southport, NC on the recommendation of a good friend and it was a perfect way for us to end our time together. In the summer, it’s a hopping beach town with lots going on but during the shoulder season it’s quiet and mellow and exactly what we needed. We got our virtual work done, spent time on the beach hunting for shells and sea biscuits, watched beautiful sunsets, and kayaked.
